How to Clean a K&N Air Filter (5 Easy Steps)

Step 1: Remove the Dirty Air Filter
Carefully remove the clogged-up K&N air filter from your vehicle. Ensure the engine is cool before handling. Inspect for debris and note how dirty the pleats are. This is your starting point for a deep clean.

Step 2: Soak in Degreaser Solution
Prepare a pail with a degreasing solution and fully submerge the filter. Let it soak for about 3 hours to break down oils and buildup. This deep soak loosens heavy grime that a quick rinse can’t remove.

Step 3: Scrub and Rinse Under Running Water
After soaking, gently scrub the pleats using a soft brush and a bit of detergent. Do this under cool, running water to flush out grime from the inside out. Avoid high pressure and harsh scrubbing to prevent damage.

Step 4: Let It Air-Dry Completely
Set the filter in a warm, shaded area and allow it to air-dry fully. Do not use heat sources or compressed air, as these can warp the filter. This step is crucial—make sure it’s bone dry before moving on.

Step 5: Re-Oil with High-Density Engine Oil
Once dry, evenly brush high-density engine oil onto each pleat. This coating helps trap dust and particles when the filter is in use. Let the oil settle in for 15–20 minutes, then inspect for full coverage before reinstalling.
